Seeing Beyond Our Differences Summary

In Sheri White’s “This I believe” essay she talks about differences amoung us as humans. She is mixed race but claims that while she was younger she didn’t quite realize that. She recalls first realizing difference in race at church while her father and mother held hands. She says that before she realized race she saw them as her parents. She says that deep down we are all the same really, all human. That skin color, height, and other factors are what make us unique to ourselves however, everything else, everything in the inside and what makes up your body are all the same.

Work is a Blessing Summary

I listened to “Work is a Blessing” by Russel Honore. In his story he made a testimony about how being able to work is a privilege often taken for granted. He recalls having a job when he was younger that he didn’t enjoy and complaining about that job one day at dinner, he was then told “any job is better than no job”. He says it took him many years for that to soak in and recalls seeing living proof of this statement. A mother working a laboring job while an alternative method was available, he realized that job is what her family relied on. He states that is when his gratefulness for the ability to work really kicked in and his eyes were opened to the struggles of those who couldn’t work.

Secrets to College Success

Showing up to class is the easiest way to boost your chances of success in college. While there are many other factors that play into achieving success in college, showing up is the first step. If one doesn’t attend class their missing out on all of the information they’ll need to be able to understand what’s on their test and assignments. Even if a student copies notes from a peer, missing some days of school means missing the information the instructor gave out from lecture. Listening to the teacher talk about the notes and explain what your doing in class allows you to absorb more information than just copying a friends. After showing up to class, all of the other steps to success can be followed but showing up is a basic stepping stone to that success.

Goals For My Writing

I’m actually very genuinely excited to be a part of this class. My main goal, or what I most want to accomplish within this class is confidence in my writing! I know I’m not a terrible writer but I tend to hesitate in my writing, I want to establish a flow and style in my writing so when I look at it I’m confident that my writing is meeting the standards it’s being held to and graded at. One skill I really hope to build on is the pre-writing stage. I want to have my ideas really collected and thought through so that when I begin to write I can flow through and more easily put my words together because I’ll know exactly what I want to put on the paper! I also hope to build a relationship with writing that's enthusiastic and positive. I love that my teacher has a passion for this subject and I hope to be able to gain some passion for writing and have it show through my work!

A Little Bit About Me!

Hello there! My name is Kiara Meikle and this is my English 101 blog. Since you’ll be reading my blog entry’s here’s a little bit of an introduction of who I am, where I’m from and what I’m doing here! I grew up between Alabama and Washington state, sort of bouncing back to back because my father was in the military. I’m now a college student and mother of one to a beautiful baby girl. I spend most of my time playing with my daughter or studying at school. I plan to achieve a mathematics degree and become a math professor down in the south. Currently, I am obtaining an associate’s degree in general studies and plan to transfer to a university near me afterward. I look forward to blogging here and reading others blogs as well. I hope to achieve from this blog not only a good grade in my English class😉, but also a means to express myself and share some of my story with the world!
